Inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder with unclear exact causes. Factors contributing to its development include abnormal communication between the brain and gut, irregular bowel muscle contractions, gastrointestinal infections, alterations in gut bacteria, stress, anxiety, depression, and genetics.

IBS symptoms vary but commonly include abdominal pain, which is often relieved by bowel movements, excessive gas and a feeling of fullness, and altered bowel habits such as diarrhea (IBS-D), constipation (IBS-C), or alternating between both (IBS-M). Other symptoms can include the presence of white mucus in the stool and a sudden need to have a bowel movement. IBS is a chronic condition that requires long-term management, typically involving dietary changes, stress reduction, and sometimes medication.

Here are six home remedies that may help alleviate IBS symptoms according to Noida based gastroenterology Arun Kumar.

Dietary adjustments:

High fibre foods: Incorporate more soluble fibre into your diet from sources like oats, fruits, vegetables, and legumes. This can help regulate bowel movements.

Low-FODMAP diet: Consider following a low-FODMAP diet, which limits certain types of carbohydrates that can cause bloating and discomfort. Foods to avoid include certain fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and wheat-based products.

Probiotics: Consuming probiotics can help balance the gut microbiota, which may reduce IBS symptoms. Probiotic-rich foods include yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and other fermented foods. You can also take probiotic supplements.

Herbal remedies:

Peppermint oil: Peppermint oil capsules can help reduce bloating, gas, and pain associated with IBS. It acts as an antispasmodic, relaxing the muscles in the digestive tract.

Ginger: Ginger tea or supplements can help reduce inflammation and alleviate gastrointestinal discomfort.

Stress management:

Since stress can exacerbate IBS symptoms, incorporating stress-relief practices like yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises, or mindfulness can be beneficial.

Regular exercise:

Engaging in regular physical activity helps promote healthy bowel function and reduces stress. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.

Hydration:

Staying well-hydrated is crucial for digestive health. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help keep your digestive system functioning smoothly.

Additional tips:

Avoid trigger foods: Common trigger foods include caffeine, alcohol, fatty foods, and artificial sweeteners. Identifying and avoiding these can help manage symptoms.

Eat smaller meals: Consuming smaller, more frequent meals can prevent your digestive system from becoming overwhelmed.

Chew thoroughly and eat slowly: This helps in better digestion and reduces the likelihood of IBS symptoms.
