  • Holi colours can cause rashes, eye, and breathing issues in kids
  • Use mild soap, moisturiser, and avoid harsh scrubbing after Holi
  • See a doctor if irritation, redness, or breathing problems continue.

The Holi celebrations may have settled, but for many parents, the real test begins the next day. Holi, with all its gaiety and glitter, often leaves behind more than stained clothes, it can leave behind rashes, redness, and respiratory worries in children.

Holi is undoubtedly the most anticipated festival for children. Armed with pichkaris and water balloons, they charge into the day with fearless delight. However, the chemical-laden powders sold in markets can play havoc with delicate young skin.

“Children have far more sensitive skin compared to adults,” explains Dr Bobby Sadawarti, Consultant Pediatrician, Neonatologist, Allergist, and Lactation Expert, AIMS Hospital, Dombivli. “The harsh synthetic dyes can damage their natural skin barrier, leading to contact dermatitis, itching, swelling, or even hives,” says Dr Sadawarti.

Post the colourful celebration, many parents report small red bumps, dryness, and persistent scratching. Some children wake up with puffy eyelids, burning sensations, or watering eyes, early signs of irritation or conjunctivitis. The eyes suffer when powdered colours sneak in unnoticed. Redness, pain, and light sensitivity are common complaints.

“Parents must never ignore persistent watering or redness,” warns Dr. Sadawarti, and adds, “If not cleaned properly, colours can trigger infections.” Breathing issues are another concern. When fine colour particles are inhaled, children, particularly those with asthma or bronchitis, may begin coughing or wheezing. “In susceptible children, exposure can aggravate respiratory symptoms,” he adds firmly.

The mandatory care parents must not ignore

Gently cleanse, don’t scrub

Wash off remaining colours with lukewarm water and mild soap. Avoid harsh scrubbing, which worsens irritation. Pat the skin dry softly with a towel. Aggressive rubbing can deepen rashes and cause micro-abrasions on sensitive young skin.

Moisturise generously

Apply a thick layer of moisturiser or coconut oil after bathing. This restores lost hydration and helps repair the damaged skin barrier. “Moisturising is crucial to calm inflammation and prevent dryness.” advises Dr. Sadawarti.

Soothe irritated eyes

Rinse eyes gently with clean, cool water if mild irritation persists. Avoid over-the-counter drops unless prescribed. If redness or swelling continues beyond a day, consult a doctor promptly to rule out infection.

Watch breathing closely

Observe for coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath. Keep children indoors away from dust if symptoms appear. Those with asthma must continue prescribed inhalers without interruption and seek medical advice if discomfort increases.

Check ears and scalp

Colours often settle in ears and hair. Clean outer ears carefully with a soft cloth; never insert sharp objects. Oil the scalp lightly to reduce dryness and itching, and use a mild shampoo to wash residue away.
