Holi 2026 skin and hair care guide: What to do the night before Holi, in the morning, and how to remove colours

Holi is a riot of colour, laughter, and pure chaos. Nevertheless, eavy metals, industrial dyes, and harsh alkalines in synthetic powders can wreak havoc, especially on melanin-rich Indian skin. Expert  shares a foolproof, three-step routine to keep your skin glowing, protected, and happy before, during, and after the festival.

  • Cleanse, hydrate, and moisturize skin before Holi.
  • Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen and lip balm before stepping out for Holi
  • Post-Holi, use oil-based cleanser and niacinamide for repair

Holi is a time when streets in India are transformed into rainbow battlegrounds. Your skin, however, is often the first casualty. While most people focus primarily on removing colours, many don't realise that the real window of protection is the 12 hours before you go out to play Holi.

A well-hydrated, barrier-strong skin is significantly more resilient to synthetic pigments and alkaline dyes, says Malini Adapureddy, Founder and CEO of Deconstruct Skincare. “Think of it like priming a wall before painting,” she adds.

The night before Holi

The colour prevention begins the evening before the chaos. “Start with a gentle cleanser, something that sweeps away dirt but respects your acid mantle. Acne-prone skin benefits from low-concentration salicylic acid; dry or sensitive skin should choose hydrating amino-acid cleansers,” Adapureddy says.

She suggests following with a hyaluronic acid serum that hydrates at multiple layers, then seal in moisture with a niacinamide, panthenol, or NMF-enriched moisturiser. “Even oily skin needs this step: skipping it triggers overactive sebum, making oiliness worse,” the expert warns.

The morning of Holi

SPF is your Holi MVP. A broad-spectrum SPF 50+ with PA++++ protection shields against UVA rays, the main culprit behind tanning and pigmentation. Adapureddy advises using lightweight, water-resistant formulas for combination or oily skin, applied liberally across the face, neck, and arms. “Don’t forget lips. An SPF 50 lip balm protects against dryness, pigmentation, and sunburn while you chase, or are chased by colour,” she says.

Post-Holi care:

Resist scrubbing. Your skin is sensitised and micro-abrasions only make hyperpigmentation worse. “Start with an oil-based cleansing balm to dissolve pigments gently, then follow with a mild face wash. Avoid AHAs, retinol, or strong vitamin C for 24 hours,” Adapureddy informs.

Niacinamide (5–10 per cent) is your post-Holi hero. Adapureddy says it reduces inflammation, inhibits melanin transfer, and accelerates barrier repair. “For lingering tanning, a two- to three-week course of alpha arbutin serum works gently without harsh irritation. Lips benefit from hyaluronic acid balms or overnight collagen-boosting masks for soft, hydrated recovery,” she adds.

More Holi skincare tips

Adapureddy suggests some Holi skin essentials:

Evening prep is everything: Cleanse gently, hydrate deeply, moisturise strategically. A strong barrier fights synthetic pigments before they touch your skin.

Never skip sunscreen: Broad-spectrum SPF 50+ shields from UV and chemical colour damage, for face, neck, arms, and lips.

Oil-first cleansing: Melt away powders without scrubbing. Use a gentle follow-up wash to clear residue.

Niacinamide to the rescue: Post-festival, it calms, repairs, and limits pigmentation in melanin-rich skin.

Hydrate lips: SPF 50 lip balm during Holi; hyaluronic acid or overnight masks afterwards restore softness.
