The significance of routine health monitoring grows with age. Due to their increased vulnerability to age-related illnesses and chronic disorders, older people require proactive healthcare management. Regular preventive care ensures a higher quality of life in later years by assisting in the early detection and control of health conditions.

To maintain their health as long as feasible, elderly people, especially those over 60, should get specialised medical examinations catered to their age and medical conditions. Dr Rajiv Dang, senior director and HOD-Internal medicine and medical director, Max Hospital, Gurugram, suggests the necessary medical checkups for the elderly.

Blood profile

For older people, a complete blood profile is essential. Tests for thyroid function, liver function, renal function, blood sugar levels (to identify or treat diabetes), cholesterol (to monitor heart health), and a full blood count should all be included. These examinations offer a comprehensive view of essential bodily processes and can aid in the early detection of illness.

Gender-specific examinations

For men: It is advised to have a prostate checkup that includes a PSA test. Prostate cancer, which is more prevalent in older men, can be detected early with the aid of this test.

For women: Mammograms should be performed on elderly women to test for breast cancer, and Pap smears should be performed to check for cervical cancer. These tests are crucial for early detection of illnesses that could be fatal.

Cardiovascular health

Heart disease poses a serious threat to the elderly population. To monitor heart health and identify any irregularities, an electrocardiogram (ECG) and a chest X-ray are advised. These examinations aid in the diagnosis of conditions including cardiac hypertrophy or arrhythmias.

Imaging tests

An ultrasound can help diagnose abdominal disorders or discover malignancies. It is a non-invasive method for assessing the elderly's organs and finding any anomalies.

Nutritional deficiency screening

Vitamin D3 and B12 deficiency are widespread among the elderly Indian population, as a major number of them are vegetarians. It is essential to test for these vitamins because a deficiency can result in weariness, problems with bone health, and cognitive loss. Supplementation done correctly might enhance their general health.

Frequency of tests

Not all of these tests have to be run at every checkup. It is adequate to establish a baseline with a first thorough examination and repeat specific tests every six months to a year, as directed by a doctor. The quality of life for senior citizens can be greatly improved by preventive exams and a watchful attitude toward health, which can also aid in effectively managing age-related health issues.
