Eggs have always been under the scanner, even though they are packed with nutrition. Dr Shubham Vatsya, a Fortis gastroenterologist, appeared on Ranveer Allahbadia’s YouTube show to clarify why this superfood is excellent for your health. And for those who don’t consume eggs, he also suggested the best vegetarian alternatives, including soy, which he said does not cause “man boobs.”
Starting with eggs, Dr Vatsya said, “Marketing scams that claim egg yolks are bad because they increase cholesterol and cause heart attacks should be debunked. Many people ask how I can include eggs in a vegetarian diet. But you shouldn’t get into a debate about it, but just eat eggs.”
Dr Vatsya pointed out that one whole egg has all nine essential amino acids. “They are required by the body, and since it can’t make them on its own, they have to be sourced from outside. Scientifically, it is the only food that provides all nine essential amino acids.”
He shared that an egg has 6 gm of protein, which directly gets absorbed by the body. “Vegetarians are not getting enough B12, but egg yolk has it. It also has Vitamin A, which is good for your eyes. For growing kids, Vitamin D and protein are necessary.” An egg has all these vitamins and minerals.
“Eggs have choline, which is a blessing for your liver and brain health. The yolks also contain lutein and zeaxanthin, which are excellent for your retina health and help prevent diabetic blindness,” he said. When it comes to cooking them in the right oil, he suggested olive oil for those who are able to afford it, otherwise mustard oil or desi ghee.
Dr Vatsya added that eggs are inexpensive options, especially for the malnutritioned and the poor, but there are scams against them to sell commercial proteins.

When asked about the vegetarian sources of proteins, Dr Vatsya mentioned dairy, paneer, cheese, and soya as the best options. Since there are many myths about soya, he clarified, “It does not cause man boobs and does not increase estrogen, men can have soya comfortably; there is no problem. You can take it every day without any issues.”
