Prostate cancer develops in the prostate gland, a small walnut-sized gland located below the bladder in men. It is responsible for producing seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm. According to the World Health Organisation, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men, with over 1.4 million new cases reported globally each year.

Prostate cancer may develop without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. However, as it progresses, common symptoms can include frequent urination (especially at night), weak or interrupted urine flow, blood in the urine or semen, painful urination or ejaculation, and persistent pain in the back, hips, or pelvis.

While the exact causes of prostate cancer are unknown, there are several factors that increase the risk. These include, age (particularly after 50), family history, ethnicity (higher risk for African-American men), high-fat diets and obesity, and elevated levels of testosterone and other androgens.

Here are some preventive tips for prostrate cancer:

Proper diet: Your food choices are crucial for your good health, after all, you are what you eat. Opting for a diet abundant in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Compounds like lycopene in tomatoes and isoflavones in soy are thought to offer protective benefits.

Get moving: A sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity can lead to weight gain. Regular exercise helps maintain a healthy weight and hormone balance, lowering the risk of cancer.

Abstain from certain foods: High consumption of red meat and high-fat dairy products has been linked to an increased risk of prostate cancer. Opt for lean proteins and plant-based alternatives.

Ditch the habit: Smoking is strongly associated with various cancers, including prostate cancer. Quitting smoking can substantially decrease your risk of developing prostate cancer, as well as other serious health conditions.

Early detection saves lives: Regular screening is important, particularly for men over 50 or those with a family history of prostate cancer. Timely screenings can detect prostate cancer in its early stages when treatment is most effective, potentially saving lives.

Always consult with a doctor before starting any new treatment or lifestyle change.
