A British young girl was left blind for months after using false eyelashes and the Dr later said that it is corneal ulcer. It can be caused by various factors such as bacterial, viral, or fungal infections, as well as trauma to the eye or a compromised immune system. Symptoms may include eye redness, pain, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, and discharge from the eye. let's explore how you can take care of your eyes and maintain proper hygiene.

Practice good hand hygiene: Washing your hands regularly, especially before touching your eyes or handling contact lenses, helps prevent the transfer of bacteria and other germs to your eyes, says Delhi based Ophthalmologist Rahul Saxena. Use soap, water and scrub your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds.

Proper contact lens care: If you wear contact lenses, it's crucial to follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning and disinfecting them, says Saxena. This includes using the appropriate contact lens solution and replacing your contact lens case regularly. Avoid wearing contact lenses while swimming, as water can introduce bacteria to your eyes, and in environments where there may be bacteria or pollutants that could adhere to the lenses.

Avoid eye trauma: Protecting your eyes from injury is essential for preventing corneal ulcers. Wear appropriate eye protection, such as safety glasses or goggles, when participating in sports or working in environments where there is a risk of eye injury from flying objects, chemicals, or other hazards.

Avoid sharing eye makeup: Sharing eye makeup, such as mascara or eyeliner, can transfer bacteria and increase the risk of eye infections, including corneal ulcers. Replace eye makeup regularly to prevent bacterial growth and avoid using it if you have an eye infection to prevent spreading the infection to others or re-infecting yourself, says Saxena.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, staying hydrated, and getting regular exercise are essential for overall eye health and a strong immune system. Foods rich in antioxidants, such as leafy greens, citrus fruits, and nuts, can help protect your eyes from damage caused by free radicals and support the health of your cornea.

Avoid rubbing your eyes: Rubbing your eyes can introduce bacteria and other irritants from your hands or the surrounding environment, increasing the risk of infection and injury to the cornea. If your eyes are itchy or irritated, try using artificial tears or gently rinsing your eyes with water instead of rubbing them.

Seek prompt treatment for eye infections: If you experience symptoms such as redness, pain, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, or discharge from your eyes, it's essential to see an eye care professional promptly for evaluation and treatment, says Saxena. Delaying treatment can lead to complications such as corneal ulcers, which may require more intensive treatment and can potentially cause permanent damage to your vision.
