Benefits of genetic testing: Know your genetic risks, before you say yes to marriage or plan a family

When actress Twinkle Khanna created a chart detailing the genetic health issues in her now-husband, actor Akshay Kumar's family, it focused on the importance of understanding hereditary risks. The chart included information on the age at which his relatives began to lose their hair and the cause of his aunt's death. The test helps to keep you aware of potential genetic risks when planning a family.

If you've decided that you're made for each other, or if you and your partner have decided to start a family, be aware that technology can help reduce genetic risks for your children when you choose to have them, says Dr Ramesh Hariharan, PhD, CEO of Strand Life Sciences, a Bangalore-based genomics and bioinformatics company, “This testing can help reveal the potential genetic risks that could affect your children. Also, advances in genetic testing technology can help identify and reduce these risks, enabling informed family planning.”

In India, it is estimated that a significant number of births could potentially be affected by genetic diseases. “Many conditions, such as cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, and certain inherited disorders, can lead to serious health challenges for children.” says Dr Hariharan.

Understanding your genetic predispositions can empower you to make proactive decisions about family planning.

Before planning your family, consider consulting a genetic counsellor. “A genetic counsellor can help you understand any genomic risks, explain the tools available to manage those risks, and discuss the associated ethical considerations,” suggests Dr Hariharan, adding, “They can provide insights into family history, recommend necessary genetic tests, and help interpret the results.”

Steps in genetic testing:

Once you have consulted a genetic counselor, the next step is to proceed with genetic testing. Dr Hariharan shares the process:

  • Family history assessment: The counselor will gather information about your family’s medical history to identify potential genetic risks.

  • Genetic testing: Based on the assessment, specific tests may be recommended to evaluate your genetic makeup.

  • Interpreting results: After testing, the genetic counselor will help you understand the results and their implications for family planning.
  • Prenatal testing: If recommended, consult a fetal medicine specialist for prenatal testing, which can provide additional insights into your baby's health.
