Benefits of DHA, the must-have omega-3 fatty acid for healthy pregnancies, happy moms

DHA benefits for pregnancy: A healthy diet during pregnancy is critical for both the mother and the baby. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), an omega-3 fatty acid, is crucial for the baby’s brain and eye development while also supporting the mother’s emotional health and reducing the risk of postpartum depression.

Pregnancy is a time of immense physical and emotional transformation, where a mother’s body nourishes the development of new life. During these months, proper nutrition is vital, and one nutrient that plays a pivotal role is DHA (docosahexaenoic acid).

DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid commonly found in fish oils, supports not only the baby’s brain and eye development but also the mother’s mental well-being. "DHA is a powerhouse nutrient that deserves a key place in every prenatal care plan. It is vital for both the baby's cognitive and visual development, and it helps to stabilise a mother's emotional health during pregnancy. It’s an essential ingredient for a healthy pregnancy and a strong start for the baby,” says Mumbai-based nutritionist, Bhakti Kapoor.

Kapoor lists the following reasons why DHA is essential for both the baby and the mother.

  • Supports brain growth and cognitive development: DHA is a critical building block for the baby's rapidly growing brain, particularly in the third trimester when cognitive development accelerates. Adequate DHA intake during pregnancy is linked to improved memory, learning, and focus in children. Ensuring sufficient DHA supports a baby’s brain function both in the womb and in early life.

  • Promotes visual development: DHA is essential for the formation of the baby’s retina, which is responsible for vision. A steady intake of DHA during pregnancy helps in laying the groundwork for healthy eyesight, resulting in sharper vision during infancy and childhood.

  • Reduces the risk of premature birth: One of the most remarkable benefits of DHA is its role in reducing the risk of premature birth. Premature babies often face developmental challenges, and DHA helps support healthy cell function and reduce inflammation, allowing mothers to carry their babies to full term.

  • Supports maternal well-being: DHA benefits both the baby and the mother. Pregnancy depletes the body’s DHA reserves, which can lead to mood imbalances and an increased risk of postpartum depression. Adequate DHA intake helps maintain emotional stability, supporting both mental and emotional health throughout pregnancy.

  • Convenient DHA in prenatal supplements: For mothers who find it difficult to consume enough DHA from food sources, particularly those who avoid seafood, prenatal vitamins enriched with DHA offer a convenient solution. Plant-based DHA supplements derived from algae are also available for vegan or vegetarian diets, ensuring every mother can meet her nutritional needs.
