Fast food and faster schedules are the biggest culprits when it comes to bloating, sluggish afternoons, and those dreaded energy crashes. It is important to pay attention to digestion and mindful eating. Ayurveda views digestion as the foundation of vitality. When agni is strong, energy flows naturally; when weak, fatigue follows regardless of diet quality.
Modern routines strain our digestion more than most people realise, Dr Mandeep Sahanpal, BAMS and Ayurveda expert, tells Moneycontrol. “Small, consistent habits can rebuild digestive fire far better than dramatic cleanses. It’s about rhythm, warmth, and using foods mindfully,” he suggests.

Begin the day with warm water and ginger
A simple ritual, sipping warm water first thing in the morning awakens digestion and flushes overnight toxins. Ginger can be added occasionally for an extra boost, but its hot potency means it should be used with care, seasonally and in moderation. “Warm water alone is excellent for daily use, while ginger is best for occasional digestive support,” says Dr Sahanpal.
Take ajwain after meals
A pinch of ajwain, or carom seeds, after meals helps break down heavy foods, relieve gas, and stimulate digestive enzymes. Particularly useful after rich or oily foods, it is a traditional aid that requires little effort but gives noticeable results.
Maintain regular mealtimes
Irregular meals disturb agni and sap energy. Sticking to consistent meal hours and eating in a calm environment helps the body digest efficiently and sustain energy throughout the day.

Take Triphala at night
Triphala, a blend of three fruits, supports bowel regularity and gut balance when taken at bedtime. Mild and non-habit forming, it gently clears digestive residue, helping the body feel lighter in the morning.
Choose warm, freshly-cooked foods over raw and cold foods
Ayurveda teaches that warmth aids digestion. Soups, lightly spiced vegetables, and khichdi are easier on the digestive system than cold or raw foods, which require more energy to process.
Add digestive spices like cumin, fennel, and hing
Even in small amounts, these spices stimulate digestion, calm the stomach, and prevent bloating. Incorporating them in meals or teas gradually improves gut health.
Revitalise with adaptogens and tonics
Ashwagandha, amla, moringa, and shilajit nourish deeper tissues and boost stamina. “Adaptogens and nutrient-rich herbs provide sustainable energy, unlike quick fixes,” Dr Sahanpal explains.
