Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan are often considered Bollywood’s ultimate power couple. They tied the knot in 1991, and since then, their love story has inspired millions.
However, their journey to marriage wasn’t without its challenges. Gauri’s family, especially her brother Vikrant Chibber, was strongly opposed to their relationship. Despite the opposition, the couple proved that love knows no bounds, ultimately becoming one of the most iconic couples in the industry. Today, they are parents to three children—Aryan Khan, Suhana Khan, and AbRam Khan.
In a conversation with Kapil Sharma on his show, Shah Rukh Khan talked about the hurdles he faced in securing Gauri’s love, and the troubles with her brother, Vikrant became one of the most talked-about aspects of their early relationship.
Shah Rukh’s recollects one of interactions with his now brother-in-law, with humor and bravado masking the underlying tension.
Shah Rukh shared "Voh (Gauri Khan's brother) apne aap ko school kay bhot bade dada samajhte the, bhot pyaar hai mera unse," adding that Vikrant always tried to show off his dominance whenever they met. “Voh jab bhi mujhe milte the badi dadagiri dikhaate the, main bhi bada gunda tha, hocky vocky player tha main, toh sab mujhe bole the tameez se baat krna."
Shah Rukh continued and told the story when he later went to meet Vikrant, who warned him, "'Oee saale sunnle tu yaar, mere bhen kay saath krle dance dunce jo krna hai pr no hanky-panky'"
The Don actor added, “Ek baar usne mujhe kaha ki 'tujhe maloom hai sale katta kya hota hai' toh maine kaha ki jee mujhe nhi maloom katta kya hota hai, mujhe maloom tha lekin maine kaha nhi.”
As quoted by Shah Rukh, Vikrant replied with an even more chilling statement, “'Saale golli chlao na toh pta nhi chlta ki aage se chli hai ya peeche se chli hai'”
SRK concluded with saying, "Mere ko bada bewakoofi laga ki bandook chalaye kyu?"
In the book King of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema, journalist Anupama Chopra discusses the hurdles SRK faced to marry Gauri. The book reveals that Gauri’s brother, Vikrant, was not happy about the relationship and even went as far as threatening Shah Rukh. In an old 1994 interview with Filmfare, Gauri herself spoke about her brother’s intense protectiveness. She shared, “He’s (Vikrant) a very cool, laid-back guy but whenever he saw Shah Rukh he saw red. He was very possessive about me and he had murder on his mind every time he caught Shah Rukh looking at me.”
Gauri also recalled how Vikrant used to threaten Shah Rukh, saying he would beat him up. “He’d scream, ‘I’ll beat you to pulp, I’ll bash you up.’ The threats must have irritated Shah Rukh no end, but since he was my brother Shah Rukh would just nod and say, ‘Yeah, yeah whatever you say.’”
The story of Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan, and their initial struggles against family opposition, became a symbol of love prevailing over adversity. Vikrant's threats and Shah Rukh's courage in the face of them are a testament to how far the actor was willing to go for the woman he loved. In many ways, these early struggles played a crucial role in shaping their relationship and solidifying their place as Bollywood’s most iconic couple. Despite the challenges, they eventually overcame everything and created a beautiful family together, with three children—Aryan, Suhana, and AbRam—proving that love can conquer all.
