Bollywood star Vikrant Massey recently talked about his unusual perspective on religion and faith.
Last year, he became a father when his son Vardaan was born. In an honest interview with Rhea Chakraborty on her podcast, Vikrant disclosed that his family does not practise any particular religion, which is why they did not fill in the religion field on their son's birth certificate.
Vikrant spoke about the complexity of religion in his life but emphasised that he believes deeply in faith. “I think religion is a personal choice. For me, it's a way of life. I think everyone has the right to choose their religion. Mere ghar pe har prakaar ke religion aapko milenge. I think religion is man-made. Mai pooja karta, gurudwara bhi jaata hun, dargah bhi jaata hun (I offer prayers, I go to the gurdwara, and I also visit dargah). I get peace with all of this,” he explained.
He shared that he feels a protective force watches over him and expressed gratitude to God for the opportunities he has received and for keeping him safe every day. Vikrant also recalled how sharing these views earlier invited heavy criticism on social media, which did affect him.
When discussing his son Vardaan, Vikrant revealed a heartfelt intention behind leaving the religion field blank on the birth certificate. “On the birth certificate of my baby boy, we left the space for religion blank. So when his birth certificate came from the government, there was no religion stated on it. Toh yeh nahi hai ki sarkaar aapko bolti hai likhna padega (So it's not like the government forces you to write it). It depends on you. The moment we got his birth certificate, I put a dash in the religion column. I will be so heartbroken if I realise my son is treating anyone on the basis of the practices they follow. I am not raising my son that way,” he affirmed.
Vikrant has already emphasised his own family's rich religious and cultural diversity. His mother is Sikh, his brother converted to Islam at the age of 17, and his father is Christian.

Sheetal Thakur, a member of the Rajput Thakur family, is Vikrant's spouse. He shared that they performed a customary namkaran (naming) ceremony for their son, demonstrating his strong belief in God even though he does not personally practise any particular religion.
Vikrant and Sheetal were married in a close-knit ceremony in 2022 after being in a relationship for a while. Vikrant announced he would take a hiatus from acting to spend more time with his family following the birth of their baby Vardaan in February 2024.
