Suriya's latest flick, Retro, has opened to a strong response at the box office. The film has earned 7.50 Crore on May 2.
With Rs 19.25 crore on its first day, Retro, which debuted in theatres on May 1, got off to a great start. In two days, the Karthik Subbaraj-directed film brought in a total of Rs 26.75 crore.
On Friday, May 2, 2025, Retro had a great showing at the box office, with an overall Tamil occupancy rate of 40.23%. Beginning with a modest 23.91% occupancy during the morning screenings, the movie's audience involvement increased throughout the day. This maintained a strong turnout of 41.37% for the evening performances and improved considerably in the afternoon, reaching 42.42%.
The film peaked during the night shows, with an impressive 53.22% occupancy, highlighting the growing interest and positive response from viewers as the day progressed.
The film witnessed high occupancy in Tamil Nadu's Trichy with 66.50% viewership, followed by Chennai with 58.50%. On Friday, May 2, Retro recorded an overall Telugu occupancy of 15.78%. The film saw a gradual increase in audience engagement throughout the day, starting with a 12.85% occupancy in the morning shows. The afternoon saw a slight rise to 18.06%, followed by a slight dip to 15.39% in the evening. The night shows saw a modest improvement, with a 16.82% occupancy, reflecting a steady but more subdued response from Telugu-speaking audiences.

Retro, which was directed by Karthik Subbaraj and produced by 2D Entertainment and Stone Bench Films, chronicles the compelling story of Suriya's character Paarivel Kannan, also known as Paari. Joju George portrays Thilakan, a formidable don who influenced Paari, a former mobster. Paari wants to get married to Rukmini, a veterinarian (played by Pooja Hegde), in order to move on from his violent past and what unfolds next makes up teh entire plot of the film. Retro also features Jayaram, Prakash Raj and Nassar in key roles.
