What was touted as one of the biggest Telugu releases of the year has now officially turned into a blockbuster.
Pawan Kalyan’s OG has smashed records at the box office and, in a surprise that delighted fans, the actor announced at the film’s success meet that the OG universe will be expanding with both a prequel and a sequel.
The event in Hyderabad was charged with excitement as the cast and crew came together to celebrate the film’s phenomenal run.
OG opened to thunderous response, collecting more than Rs 150 crore on day one (including paid previews) and crossing Rs 160 crore in its first week in India alone. The numbers make it one of the strongest openers of the year and reaffirm Kalyan’s pull at the box office.
Pawan Kalyan on Why OG Resonated With Him
As per Hindustan Times, taking the stage, Pawan Kalyan candidly reflected on how the project came together. “It is easy to write a story, but it is difficult to bring it to life on screen. In fact I am myself not aware of the full OG story. I met Trivikram Kar Sujeeth after he mentioned his name and Sujeeth told me, 'You will be gangster in a Japanese attire, holding a sword and carrying a gun.’ I did not fully understand the story at that time but when I saw my son reading the notes with joy, I realised that there is a relevance to this story for this generation.”
For an actor who has often juggled cinema with politics, OG proved to be reinvigorating. “So I confirm that let us work on a sequel and prequel to OG. I know how frustrating it can be when a film fails but OG has given me the motivation to do films again. I want to continue the OG world in the time I get.”
Directed by Sujeeth, OG sees Pawan Kalyan play a former gangster returning to Mumbai to confront a new threat, Omi, played by Emraan Hashmi in his much-anticipated Telugu debut. The film also stars Priyanka Mohan, Sriya Reddy, Arjun Das, and Prakash Raj, who bring depth and drama to the narrative.
