On a recent podcast, the host asked celebrated Punjabi rapper Diljit Dosanjh why he never says things like “I am the first Indian to achieve this” but rather says ‘Punjabi aa gaye oye.’
“Aap har jagah aise bolte hai ki ‘Punjabi aa gaye oye,’ I have never heard you say anything else ki ‘I am the first Indian to perform here,’ I am the first Indian to do this,’ Punjab hi bolte ho, aise kya?,” the host asked Dosanjh.
“Bohot sahi question pooch aapne,” Dosanjh said, “Bhai, ek toh jagah choti si hai poore India mai. Aur ek mai aata hu uss jagah se jaha ka original music hai. Aisa nahi hai ki mai Hindi gaane gaa raha hu ki poora India mujhe sun raha hai. Ek koi bohot choti si jagah se mai aata hu Punjab se. Ek state se aata hu. Woh ek feel hai na ek jagah se jab aap choti jagah se aate ho. Obviously, Punjab haha hai? India mai hai. Jab mai Punjab ki baat kar raha hu toh mai India ki hi baat kar raha hu,” the singer explained.
He continued, "Aur India level pe toh bohot bade bade artists hai. Already hai. Mai thodi Sonu Nigam jaisa aha gaa sakta hu. Nahi gaa sakta mai. Woh toh playback singing karte hai. Mera toh ek apna style hai gaane ki, right? Toh woh ek uss jagah se mane ka feel hai ki, yaar, hum yaha se bhi aagaye, bhai,” he said, laughing, “Woh ek ye feel hai.”
Dosanjh has been cementing his icon status at a global level with his fresh sound. The musician will also be debuting on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.’ Dosanjh also recently performed at Lollapalooza which further established his global influence.
Dosanjh has also teamed up with Prabhas for the 'Bhairava Anthem,' a song in Nag Ashwin’s ‘Kalki 2898 AD.’ The song was released on Sunday, 16 June.
