Timothée Chalamet is teaming up with indie director Josh Safdie for a lead in a new biopic.
The acclaimed actor is set to star in and produce "Marty Supreme," an original film from Josh Safdie and A24. While the film remains shrouded in mystery, sources suggest it is a fictionalized tale inspired by the life of professional ping pong player Marty Reisman.

"Marty Supreme" boasts a script penned by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein, with production duties shared by Safdie, Chalamet, Bronstein, Eli Bush, and Anthony Katagas. This project marks a significant reunion between Safdie and A24, who previously collaborated on the critically acclaimed films "Uncut Gems" and "Good Time."

A24 confirmed the exciting news on social media, posting, "Josh Safdie’s MARTY SUPREME starring @RealChalamet. Coming soon." The anticipation is palpable as fans await a story inspired by the legendary Reisman. Known as the “wizard of table tennis,” Reisman was a table tennis champion who started his career hustling in Manhattan, playing for bets and prize money. His illustrious career spanned decades, during which he won 22 major ping pong titles and five bronze medals at the World Table Tennis Championships. In a remarkable feat, he became the oldest player to win an open national competition in a racket sport at the age of 67.
Chalamet's admiration for the Safdie brothers is well-documented. In 2019, he penned an essay for Variety, praising their Adam Sandler thriller "Uncut Gems" for its raw and untethered storytelling. “The pair have continuously put out contemporary, raw and untethered work over the last decade, each film building on the traits of the prior, but never once sacrificing their innate grittiness,” Chalamet wrote.
Following the success of "Uncut Gems," the Safdie brothers have pursued solo careers, though they continue to produce projects together under their Elara Pictures banner. "Marty Supreme" marks Josh Safdie's first film in the director's chair since "Uncut Gems," and his first solo directorial effort since his 2008 debut, "The Pleasure of Being Robbed."
Chalamet, fresh off his roles in Denis Villeneuve’s "Dune: Part Two" and the musical "Wonka," is in final negotiations for "Marty Supreme." His recent projects also include James Mangold’s biopic "A Complete Unknown," in which he stars as a young Bob Dylan.
As for the Safdie brothers, Benny Safdie is set to direct Dwayne Johnson in A24’s "The Smashing Machine," a biopic about former wrestler and mixed martial artist Mark Kerr. Meanwhile, "Marty Supreme" promises to be a compelling addition to Josh Safdie's filmography, blending the gritty, raw style he's known for with Chalamet's undeniable star power.
