Leonardo DiCaprio will be presenting veteran Hollywood legend Robert De Niro with the honorary Palme d'Or for lifetime achievement The prestigious award at the opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday, May 13.
Variety confirmed the news, a day before Cannes Film festival begins on Tuesday. Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro first appeared together in the 1993 film This Boy’s Life and teamed up again nearly 30 years later for Killers of the Flower Moon, which was featured in the official selection at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
When his honorary Palme d'Or was announced last month, Robert De Niro expressed his deep affection for the Festival de Cannes, saying he held very close feelings for the event. "Especially now when there’s so much in the world pulling us apart, Cannes brings us together — storytellers, filmmakers, fans, and friends. It’s like coming home," he said.
The 81-year-old actor, a festival mainstay, will also conduct a masterclass at the Palais' Debussy Theatre on Wednesday. In 2011, the year Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life won the Palme d'Or, the Oscar-winning star of Raging Bull and The Godfather Part II was the jury president at Cannes.
Robert De Niro made a big impact at Cannes in 1976 with two competing films, Taxi Driver (Martin Scorsese) and 1900 (Bernardo Bertolucci). Taxi Driver became well-known right away after winning the Palme d'Or, the festival's top honour.
Roland Joffé's The Mission (1986), Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America (1984), and The King of Comedy (1983) marked De Niro's subsequent return to the Croisette. When The Mission also won the Palme d'Or, De Niro became one of the few actors to appear in two Palme d'Or-winning films.
Robert Di Nero is known for his excellent work in wide range of films including timeless classics like Taxi Driver, The Godfather Part II, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Joker, and more.
