A devastating fire that ripped through multiple high-rise apartment blocks in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district on November 26 has claimed dozens of lives including that of a firefighter who was set to be married next month.

According to Koreaboo, authorities confirmed that 37-year-old firefighter Ho Waiho was among the victims of the massive blaze, which has so far resulted in 79 deaths, 76 injuries, and numerous residents still unaccounted for. Police have arrested two company directors and an engineering consultant on suspicion of manslaughter, stating that their “gross negligence” allowed the fire to spread rapidly, causing catastrophic loss of life.

Ho Waiho, a respected member of the Fire Services Department for nine years, was found collapsed inside one of the burning buildings while rescuing residents. He was rushed to hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries.

Ho was known among colleagues for his dedication, bravery, and calm presence during emergencies — qualities that were evident until his final moments.

Fire Services Director Andy Yeung paid tribute to the fallen firefighter, saying, “I am profoundly grieved at the loss of this dedicated and gallant fireman. All of our colleagues are deeply saddened by the loss of such a devoted comrade. On behalf of all our colleagues, I have offered the deepest condolences to his family.”

Ho was just weeks away from marrying his longtime girlfriend of nearly ten years. She frequently appeared in his Instagram posts, where he also showcased his interests — including his love for BLACKPINK, highlighted in one of his account sections.

His fiancée mourned him publicly, calling him her “superhero” and saying he had “completed his mission.”

The incident has shocked Hong Kong, prompting widespread mourning and renewed scrutiny of safety compliance in high-rise buildings. The Hong Kong Sheung Kung Hui Welfare Council has launched fundraising efforts and support initiatives, including grief counseling, to aid survivors and the families of those affected.

Meanwhile the 2025 MAMA Awards decided not to cancel the event despite the tragedy. There has been mounting backlash after organisers confirmed the show would proceed in Hong Kong despite a catastrophic residential fire that has left the city shaken. Amid growing scrutiny, CJ ENM announced on Thursday evening that the ceremony, supported in part by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, will go ahead. In an official statement, the company offered its “deepest condolences” and “heartfelt sympathy” to those affected, revealing that the upcoming broadcast will include a “Support Hong Kong” message and a dedicated moment of remembrance.

Organisers also confirmed that the show has been significantly toned down in light of the tragedy. Furthermore, they pledged to make a donation toward relief efforts, emphasising that the revised program aims to respect the gravity of the situation while acknowledging the months of logistical planning behind the event.
