The 78th Cannes Film Festival organisers have made a bold decision that will undoubtedly change the fashion narrative at one of the most prominent film festivals in the world: they have changed the dress code to specifically target the "naked dress," which has become a popular red carpet trend.

Using sheer materials like lace, chiffon, and mesh to create the appearance of bareness, this style has become increasingly popular among celebrities who want to make daring fashion statements in recent years. But it appears that the days of strategic openness may be coming to an end.

With just 24 hours to go before the festival's grand opening on May 13, 2025, as per the official document of the Cannes Film Festival 2025: “For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the Red Carpet, as well as in any other area of the Festival.”

The provision effectively puts popular styles under scrutiny and implies that this year's fashion will lean more modestly by taking a strong stand against risqué ensembles.

The iconic red carpet moments from the previous year, such as Vicky Krieps' boudoir-inspired Armani Privé gown and Bella Hadid's sheer Saint Laurent gown, might now be relics of a bygone era of Cannes fashion.

Adding to the sartorial restrictions, the festival has also banned voluminous outfits, particularly those with long trains, as they “hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theatre.” In addition, tote bags, backpacks, and large bags are now forbidden during gala screenings, with lockers available near Gare Maritime.

Evening wear remains mandatory for red carpet gala screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière. As outlined in the dress code, guests must wear long dresses or tuxedos, or opt for classic cocktail attire, such as a black suit and tie, or a smart top with black trousers.

Failing to adhere to these regulations will have consequences. The document clearly states, “The Festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit Red Carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.”

A more sophisticated, possibly restrained red carpet is anticipated at Cannes 2025, where the spectacle of sheer might finally give way to the spectacle of cinema.
