Two decades after her unforgettable performance in Chandni Bar, talented actress Tabu might be returning to the world that won her a National Award.
A source close to the production has revealed that the makers of Chandni Bar 2 are in advanced talks with the Maqbool actress to reprise her legendary role as Mumtaz Sawant.
The sequel, titled Chandni Bar Reopens, is being produced by Sandeep Singh under his banner Legend Studios, with Ajay Bahl (known for Section 375 and BA Pass) directing the film.
Set 25 years after the events of the original, the sequel is described as a reimagined story that explores a new era of Mumbai’s underbelly, its changing socio-economic realities and the evolution of the city’s infamous nightlife.
"The producers are keenly interested in having her reprise her iconic role, as her presence is considered essential to the sequel's credibility and emotional core. The conversation is currently in process, the official casting confirmation of the actress is still awaited," says the source. “Discussions are underway, but the official casting confirmation is still awaited.”
While the film is expected to introduce a new protagonist, several names from Bollywood’s younger generation including Ananya Panday, Sharvari and Tripti Dimrii are reportedly being considered for the complex lead role.
Chandni Bar, which released in 2001, was directed by Madhur Bhandarkar and it achieved a cult status. It is loved for its raw portrayal of Mumbai’s bar culture and the struggles faced by the bar dancers.
Tabu’s performance as Mumtaz, a woman forced into the dance bar circuit after personal tragedy, remains one of the most acclaimed of her career.
If finalised, Chandni Bar 2 will mark Tabu’s celebrated return to one of her most powerful roles — a reunion that fans and critics alike are already calling “a full-circle moment” for Indian cinema.
