Major Mohit Sharma’s family moves Delhi High Court, claims Ranveer Singh's Dhurandhar misrepresents his life

The family of late Major Mohit Sharma has moved the Delhi High Court seeking to halt the release of the film Dhurandhar, alleging that it presents a distorted account of his life and military operations.

The parents of Ashoka Chakra and Sena Medal awardee, late Major Mohit Sharma, have sought an urgent stay on the release of Dhurandhar starring Ranveer Singh in the lead,  according to reports by Bar and Bench. In their petition, the family claims the film draws extensively from Major Sharma’s life, covert operations, and martyrdom without obtaining permission from either the Indian Army or his legal heirs.

While media speculations and online discussions have linked the film Dhurandhar to Major Sharma’s story, the petition asserts that the filmmakers have neither acknowledged this inspiration nor consulted the family.

The petition emphasises that a martyr 'is not a commercial commodity' and argues that no one has the right to depict a soldier’s life for profit without ensuring accuracy, dignity, and proper approvals.

The plea also raises concerns over national security, highlighting that the film reportedly depicts sensitive military tactics, infiltration techniques, and operational procedures without evidence of clearance or script approval from the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI), the body responsible for overseeing the portrayal of the Indian Army in media.

The family has requested the Delhi High Court to halt the film’s public release, conduct a private screening for Major Sharma’s family beforehand, and issue a wider directive mandating that any future films based on real-life military martyrs obtain prior approval from both the Army and the martyrs’ legal heirs.

Although the film's director, Aditya Dhar, has already cleared the air that the film is not related to Major Mohit Sharma. Aditya earlier wrote, “Hi, sir - our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of braveheart Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM. This is an official clarification. I assure you, if we do make a biopic on Mohit sir in the future, we will do it with full consent and in complete consultation with the family, and in a way that truly honors his sacrifice for the nation and the legacy it has left for all of us.”
