Dhurandhar director Aditya Dhar issues ‘official clarification’, says the film is not based on Major Mohit Sharma

The Mohit Sharma Memorial Trust later reposted Aditya’s statement, expressing gratitude for the clarification and confirming publicly that the film does not depict Major Mohit’s story.

As soon as the trailer of Dhurandhar mentioned that the film is ‘inspired by incredible true events,’ viewers immediately began digging into how the Aditya Dhar-directed action thriller might be linked to real-life incidents.

Netizens speculated that the film could be inspired by the life of late Major Mohit Sharma, given the trailer’s tone and the undercover elements hinted at in the narrative.

Online users also pointed out striking parallels between the film’s characters and real historical figures. They observed that R. Madhavan’s Ajay Sanyal, Akshaye Khanna’s Rehman Dakait, Sanjay Dutt’s SP Chaudhary Aslam, and Arjun Rampal’s Major Iqbal ISI seem modeled on Ajit Doval, Rehman Dakait, Chaudhry Aslam Khan, and Ilyas Kashmiri, respectively.

With Ranveer Singh’s character name being deliberately withheld in the trailer, many viewers assumed he was portraying Major Mohit Sharma, who famously went undercover in Pakistan as Iftikhar Bhatt to infiltrate the Hizbul Mujahideen in the early 2000s.

However, when Major Mohit’s brother, Madhur Sharma, addressed the speculation on X, asking directly whether the story was indeed based on Mohit, director Aditya Dhar issued a clear clarification - affirming that Dhurandhar is not based on the life of the intelligence agent.

The Mohit Sharma Memorial Trust later reposted Aditya’s statement, expressing gratitude for the clarification and confirming publicly that the film does not depict Major Mohit’s story.

Their caption read, "Finally Aditya Dhar confirms that the film Dhurandhar is NOT based on life of Major Mohit Sharma."

Responding directly to the post, Aditya Dhar reiterated his stance and issued an official confirmation and assurance to the family that if he ever decides to make a film on Major Mohit then he would seek full consent.

He wrote, "Hi, sir - our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of braveheart Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM. This is an official clarification. I assure you, if we do make a biopic on Mohit sir in the future, we will do it with full consent and in complete consultation with the family, and in a way that truly honors his sacrifice for the nation and the legacy it has left for all of us. Jai Hind."

One of India's most decorated soldiers, Major Mohit Sharma, received the Ashoka Chakra, the country's highest peacetime gallantry award, after his death in 2009 during an anti-terror operation in the Kupwara region of Jammu and Kashmir.

Prior to that, in the early 2000s, he had successfully infiltrated the Hizbul Mujahideen network in Pakistan under the alias Iftikhar Bhatt, one of the most audacious undercover operations of the twenty-first century.

Meanwhile, the Ranveer Singh–led Dhurandhar is gearing up for its worldwide theatrical release on December 5, 2025, with expectations skyrocketing as the film continues to fuel discussions across the internet.
