Lucky Ali has taken a jibe at Javed Akhtar after a controversial video has resurfaced online. The clip features Javed Akhtar recalling an event where he asked Hindus “not to become like Muslims”.

The timeline of the video and the event from which it originated remain unclear. In the footage, Javed Akhtar discusses freedom of speech, democracy, and references a famous 1975 Sholay scene where Dharmendra hides behind a Shiv murti and Hema Malini’s character believes she’s hearing the deity speak. “In Sholay, there was a scene where Dharmendra hides behind Shiv ji's murti and speaks, and Hema Malini thinks Shiv ji is talking to her. Is it possible to have a scene like that today? No, I will not write a scene like this today. Were there no Hindus in 1975? Were there no dharmic people? There were...,” Javed Akhtar says in the clip.

He goes on to claim, “As a matter of fact, I'm on record, I'm not saying it right here. Raju Hirani and I were in Pune in front of a big audience and I said 'Don't become like Muslims. Make them like yourself. You are becoming like Muslims.' It's a tragedy.”

Responding to the viral clip, Lucky Ali commented on X, “Don't become like Javed Akhtar, never original and ugly as f***…”

Javed Akhtar has long been a target of trolling from both Hindu and Muslim fundamentalists. In an NDTV interview last month, he reflected on the threats he has faced over the years. “Some of them call me a jihadi and that I should migrate to Pakistan. Some say I'm a kaafir and I will 100% go to hell and I should change my name… In the last 20-25 years, Mumbai Police has offered me protection at least four times on their own… Three out of four times it was because of some Muslim organisations or people and one time from the other side,” he said.

Last month, a cultural event in Kolkata was postponed after objections from Muslim organization Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, who opposed Akhtar serving as chief guest.

Meanwhile, Lucky Ali has also faced backlash for religious remarks in the past. In 2023, he sparked criticism for claiming that the word “Brahman” was derived from “Abram.” He later deleted the post and issued an apology to “Hindu brothers and sisters,” clarifying that he did not intend to cause distress or anger.
