As per Free Press Journal, Thiam has filed for divorce, bringing an end to what was, until now, a 29-year-long marriage. She cited irreconcilable differences in the filing — a quiet but firm signal that their relationship has come to a point of no return.

In her legal documents, Thiam noted the date of separation as “TBD”, suggesting the situation has been unfolding gradually. The couple share a 17-year-old daughter named Journey, and Thiam has requested joint legal custody.

However, she’s asked for primary physical custody, with Akon allowed visitation rights — a common arrangement that still hints at the emotional weight such decisions carry.

Beyond custody, she’s also seeking spousal support, while asking the court to deny Akon any such claims in return — a move that has sparked further public interest, especially considering the timing.

The announcement is all the more bittersweet because the news of their split was made just days before their 29th wedding anniversary.

In addition to his music, Akon has also been in the news over the years for his unorthodox views on relationships and love. He has publicly discussed having multiple relationships at the same time and frequently adopting a polygamous lifestyle.

During an interview in 2022, Akon maintained his convictions., saying, "(Polygamy is) part of our culture. Absolutely," and adding, "For me, it looks normal, because it’s culture for us. We didn’t go outside of our African culture when we got to the Western world. The flaw that the Western world made is they created all these rules without putting nature into account."

In fact, in 2023, musician Amirror publicly claimed she was one of Akon’s four wives — underlining just how complex and layered his personal life has always been.

Now, as Akon and Thiam prepare to go their separate ways, it marks not just the end of a marriage, but perhaps the closing of a long and complicated chapter in both their lives.
