1 killed, 8 injured as Television director rams SUV into pedestrians in Kolkata's crowded area

A shocking accident in Kolkata on Sunday morning saw a film and TV director, allegedly drunk, drive his SUV into a crowded area. The incident claimed one life and left eight others critically injured.

As reported by The Times of India, the incident took place while Siddhant Das was driving from Bakrahat towards Gariahat.

In a tragic incident that unfolded in Kolkata on Sunday morning, a film and television director, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, rammed his SUV into a crowded area, resulting in the death of one person and leaving at least eight others critically injured.

The horrifying incident took place in the Thakurpukur area, a busy locality in South Kolkata.

As per media reports quoting police sources, the accused, identified as 35-year-old Siddhant Das, a TV director associated with the Bangla entertainment industry, was reportedly intoxicated at the time of the accident.

As reported by The Times of India, the incident took place while Siddhant Das was driving from Bakrahat towards Gariahat. During the drive, he reportedly lost control of his SUV and drove into the crowded Thakurpukur market, where several people were out shopping amidst the morning bustle. Following the accident, Das was taken into custody by the police, and an investigation is currently in progress.

As reported by PTI, Police official said, "The accident occurred around 9:30 AM when the vehicle lost control in the overcrowded Thakurpukur Bazar on Bakrahat Road, knocking down nine pedestrians."

"The vehicle has been seized and will be sent for examination. The driver has been arrested and will be produced in court on Monday," he further added.

Aminur Rahman, 63, who was selling vegetables at the market, sustained severe injuries in the incident and lost consciousness on the spot. He was rushed to a private hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries.

According to eyewitness accounts reported by News18, the SUV driven by Siddhant Das struck several two-wheelers and pedestrians before coming to a stop after crashing into a parked scooter.

Police have confirmed that Das was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, and four liquor bottles were recovered from his vehicle. Authorities also detained a woman who was travelling with him in the SUV, while another woman, seated in the back, reportedly fled the scene. Das was arrested soon after the incident, and further investigation is underway.
