Every year on 5 September, India observes Teachers’ Day to recognise the role of teachers in shaping the lives of students and contributing to the progress of society. The date marks the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the country’s second President, who was also a respected philosopher and educationist.

Origin of Teachers’ Day in India

The tradition of celebrating Teachers’ Day began in 1962. When Dr Radhakrishnan became President, some of his students and friends wished to celebrate his birthday. He suggested that instead of marking it as a personal occasion, the day should be dedicated to honouring teachers across the nation. The Government of India accepted his proposal, and since then, 5 September has been observed as Teachers’ Day in schools, colleges, and educational institutions throughout the country.

About Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

Born in 1888, Dr Radhakrishnan was a distinguished scholar of philosophy. He served as the first Vice-President of India from 1952 to 1962 and as the second President from 1962 to 1967. Throughout his career, he emphasised the importance of education in national development and consistently acknowledged the contribution of teachers in building an informed and responsible society.

How Teachers’ Day is Celebrated

Teachers’ Day is marked by various activities in educational institutions. In many schools, senior students take on the role of teachers for the day, conducting classes for younger students. This role reversal is a symbolic gesture to appreciate the efforts of teachers and to understand the responsibilities they carry. Cultural programmes, speeches, and special functions are organised to highlight the significance of teaching and to express gratitude towards educators. In some places, teachers also take on the role of students, reflecting the idea that learning is a shared process between teacher and pupil.

The day serves as an opportunity for students to express respect and appreciation for their teachers. It also reminds society of the essential role educators play in imparting knowledge, instilling values, and preparing future generations for the challenges ahead. Teachers’ Day is not only a celebration of individual teachers but also a recognition of the teaching profession as a whole.
