Voyager 1 Becomes the First Spacecraft to Enter Interstellar Space (2012)
In a remarkable feat of human engineering and exploration, NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft made history on this day in 2012 by becoming the first human-made object to enter interstellar space. Launched on September 5, 1977, Voyager 1 had already captured the first overview photograph of the solar system in February 1990. As it ventured beyond the heliosphere—the region of space dominated by the Sun's influence—Voyager 1 continued to send back invaluable data from the edge of our solar system, solidifying its place as the most distant human-made object in existence.

Michael Schumacher's Formula One Debut (1991)
German racing legend Michael Schumacher made his Formula One debut on this day at the Belgian Grand Prix held at Spa Francorchamps. Though Schumacher did not secure a victory in his first race, his entry into Formula One marked the beginning of an extraordinary career. Schumacher would go on to dominate the sport, winning an unprecedented 91 Formula One Grand Prix races, establishing himself as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport.

The Liberation of Paris (1944)
On this day in 1944, Paris was liberated from Nazi control, marking a turning point in World War II. The battle for Paris, which began on August 19, 1944, saw French resistance fighters, supported by American forces led by General George Patton, rise against the occupying Nazi forces. The Nazi Commander of Paris, General Dietrich von Choltitz, ultimately surrendered, defying Hitler's orders to destroy the city. On August 26, General Charles de Gaulle led a triumphant liberation march along the Champs-Élysées, heralding the restoration of the French Republic.

The Great Moon Hoax Begins (1835)
On this day in 1835, the New York newspaper The Sun published the first installment of what would become known as the "Great Moon Hoax." The series of articles claimed that a civilization had been discovered on the Moon, complete with detailed descriptions of lunar inhabitants. The sensational story captivated the public, despite later being revealed as a fabrication, and remains one of the most famous media hoaxes in history.

Uruguay Declares Independence from the Brazilian Empire (1825)
Uruguay took a significant step towards nationhood on this day in 1825 by declaring its independence from the Brazilian Empire. The Empire, which had itself declared independence from Portugal in 1822, included both present-day Brazil and Uruguay. Despite this declaration, Uruguay's independence was not officially recognized until the Treaty of Montevideo was signed in 1828, solidifying the nation's sovereignty.
