Schools and colleges in several parts of southern and eastern India are closed this week as states brace for the impact of Cyclone Montha, which continues to intensify over the Bay of Bengal.
Authorities in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha have announced precautionary holidays for educational institutions amid warnings of heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Tamil Nadu Schools Closed
In Tamil Nadu, the Chennai and Tiruvallur district administrations declared a holiday for all schools on October 28, following alerts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure student safety as the cyclone moves closer to the coast.
Andhra Pradesh Schools Closed From October 27 to 31
In Andhra Pradesh, schools, colleges, and other educational institutions will remain closed from October 27 to 31, 2025, in view of worsening weather conditions. Districts including Kakinada, East Godavari, Konaseema, Eluru, and West Godavari have been put on high alert.
Authorities have also initiated evacuation plans for coastal areas expected to face strong winds and heavy rainfall. The Kakinada administration confirmed that all schools would remain shut for the week, while the Konaseema and Eluru districts have declared holidays on October 27 and 28.
Odisha School Holidays Extended Amid Red Alert
In Odisha, the government has ordered the closure of schools in eight southern districts — Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, and Kalahandi — until October 29, 2025. These areas have been placed under the Red Zone, where the cyclone’s impact is expected to be most severe.
Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors and monitor official updates as heavy rains are predicted on October 28 and 29.
Cyclone Montha Likely to Intensify Further
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Montha is expected to intensify into a severe cyclone by October 28. Coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and northern Tamil Nadu are likely to experience gusty winds and heavy downpour in the next 48 hours.
Officials in all three states have urged students and parents to stay in touch with local school authorities and district administrations for updates on school reopenings. Further announcements will depend on weather conditions and safety advisories issued by the IMD.
