Flood-hit areas of Kamareddy and Medak districts in Telangana continued to remain under strict watch for the second straight day on Thursday, as heavy and unrelenting rains lashed several parts of the state. The downpour has already claimed two lives in Kamareddy district, and officials say the scale of rain has been the worst in decades, The Indian Express reported.
According to the officials, Argonda station at Rajampet mandal in Kamareddy recorded 44 cm rainfall in just one day. In total, 23 locations across the state received more than 20 cm, with 10 places in Kamareddy, four in Nirmal, six in Medak, and the rest in Nizamabad and Siddipet. Officials described it as the “heaviest downpour in such a short span in the last 50 years.”
A total of 20 State Disaster Response Force and National Disaster Response Force teams are deployed in these affected districts. In addition, about 100 Army personnel are engaged in rescue and relief in Medak district.
In Kamareddy, the SDRF successfully evacuated nearly 500 residents from submerged colonies and shifted them to safer places.
Roads, railways, and villages hit
The rains have severely affected transport and daily life. Railway tracks at Rameshwarpally in Bhiknoor mandal caved in, halting train movement in the region until further notice. In Kamareddy town, several residential areas, including Housing Board Colony, GR Colony, Teachers Colony, Sarampally and the ST Residential School locality, were badly inundated. Officials said food packets and essential supplies were being distributed to the stranded families.
National Highway 44, which connects important routes, caved in at three spots, forcing authorities to divert traffic. In Medak district, Haveli Ghanpur, Papannapet, Ramayampet, Shankarampet (A) and Nizampet mandals were among the worst hit. Officials reported that 47 roads, 23 culverts and 15 bridges were submerged and had to be barricaded to prevent accidents. At least 16 tanks in Medak overflowed, flooding surrounding villages. Over 700 people had to be rescued, and two villagers from Rajpet lost their lives after being swept away in the fast-flowing Gandari Vagu stream. Railway tracks on the Akkanpet–Ramayampet line were also damaged, leading to cancellations.
In Rajanna Sircilla district, five people were stranded on an island after water overflowed from the Upper Manair dam. SDRF teams are working to bring them to safety. In Nirmal district too, several mandals including Sarangpur, Soan, Naspur and Nirmal town faced extremely heavy rainfall. Around 250 families from Nirmal town had to be shifted to temporary shelters in Divya Nagar, Shanti Nagar, Boiwada and GNR Colony.
Red alert in five districts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Kamareddy, Medak, Nirmal, Nizamabad and Siddipet, warning of more heavy rainfall. Another 15 districts remain on orange alert, while Hyderabad and other regions are on yellow alert. Officials have urged residents to stay cautious and avoid risky travel as rescue and relief operations continue.
