The Odisha government has laid out an elaborate and high-tech security plan to ensure the grand Puri Rath Yatra, scheduled for June 27, is safe, peaceful and incident-free.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday announced that NSG (National Security Guard) snipers, aerial surveillance by the Indian Air Force, and a five-tier security system will be in place to guard against any possible threats, The Times of India reported.

After a high-level review meeting, he said that over 10,000 security personnel, including central paramilitary forces, more than 200 platoons of state police and an anti-terror squad, will be deployed across Puri town. This year, the state is taking extra precautions to ensure an "incident-free" Rath Yatra in the wake of national security concerns following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, a recent counter-terror operation.

The state has planned to use AI-powered cameras, drones, and real-time crowd monitoring systems to tighten surveillance. "Govt is taking measures to prevent terror activities in the wake of Operation Sindoor. Rooftop deployment of NSG snipers on Grand Road and aerial patrol through helicopters to prevent potential airborne threats are under active consideration of the state govt. Our prime objective is to ensure an incident-free festival," Majhi said.

Director General of Police, Odisha, YB Khurania said that CCTV cameras are being installed at key locations and that Quick Response Teams (QRTs) will be on standby. Drones will provide aerial views to help manage the crowd, while round-the-clock patrolling will ensure law and order is maintained. Additionally, Coast Guard ships and aircraft will patrol the Puri coastline to prevent any security lapses via the sea, the Statesman reported.

To avoid stampedes, police have been asked to identify high-risk areas and deploy necessary crowd-control measures. There is also a ban on diya (oil lamp) sales and outdoor cooking in crowded zones to reduce fire hazards. The fire services department has been put on high alert as well.

Given the recent outbreaks of cholera and diarrhoea in some districts, the health department has been directed to stay alert and make emergency preparations during the festival period.

The CM has also appealed to various departments and the sebayat (temple servitor) community to work together to ensure timely rituals and smooth management of the event. "Managing the festival should be viewed not merely as an administrative duty, but as a sacred obligation and responsibility," Majhi said.
