  • Police say financial losses from betting may have led to the incident
  • Investigation ongoing; no foul play suspected so far

A 24-year-old software engineer working with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) was found dead inside a washroom on the company’s premises in Phase 3 of Hinjewadi IT Park in Pune in the early hours of Tuesday, police said. The incident came to light around 12.30 am during a routine security check.

According to the Pimpri Chinchwad police, the deceased has been identified as Sujal Vinod Oswal, a resident of Wanawadi. Oswal was employed as an Information Technology engineer with the firm and was working the night shift at the time of the incident.

Police officials said a security guard noticed that the washroom door in the company canteen area was locked from inside during a routine round. After repeated attempts to get a response failed, the guard alerted company authorities, who immediately informed the police. A team from the Hinjewadi police station rushed to the spot.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone II) Vishal Gaikwad said preliminary investigation suggests that the case is one of suicide. “The victim used a mobile phone charging wire to hang himself inside the washroom,” he said.

Officials added that early findings indicate Oswal may have been under stress due to financial losses related to betting.

“Initial investigation suggests he had suffered losses in betting activities. Before taking the extreme step, he sent a message to his family members,” DCP Gaikwad was quoted by TOI as saying. The contents of the message are being examined as part of the probe.

The body was sent for post-mortem examination, which has been completed. Police said a detailed report is being prepared and further investigation is underway to establish the exact sequence of events leading up to the incident.

“We will record statements of family members, colleagues, and company officials to understand the circumstances better,” an officer from the Hinjewadi police station said.

No foul play has been suspected so far. The police have registered an accidental death report and said further action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
