The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is building a 380-kilometre greenfield expressway under the Green Highway Policy. The project is under-construction, and once completed, the Ghaziabad-Kanpur Expressway will enhance Uttar Pradesh’s road infrastructure by linking Noida, Ghaziabad and Kanpur.
The Expressway will span 380 kilometres and connect nine districts across the state. The initial design includes four lanes, with the potential to expand to six lanes in the future to accommodate increasing traffic. The project is expected to be completed by 2026 and is being developed as a greenfield project, with a focus on promoting eco-friendly infrastructure throughout its construction and operation.
It will pass through 9 districts, including Ghaziabad, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Kasganj, Farrukhabad, Kannauj, Unnao and Kanpur.
Several media reports indicate that the NHAI plans to extend the expressway to Noida’s Jewar Airport in future to boost regional connectivity. The northern segment of the expressway will connect with National Highway 9, while the southern section will link to the 62.7-kilometre-long Kanpur-Lucknow Expressway.
It is expected to reduce travel time between Ghaziabad and Kanpur by almost 3 hours. Currently, the journey takes around 8 hours, but with the new Ghaziabad-Kanpur expressway, it is expected to take about 5 hours.
The expressway is expected to ease pressure on existing highways and support regional trade. By connecting Noida, Ghaziabad, and Kanpur through a direct, modern expressway, the project will serve as a catalyst for socio-economic progress, benefiting daily commuters, logistics operators, and local businesses alike.
