The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced 40 additional Metro trips across its network after the enforcement of GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan) Stage-II to help tackle rising air pollution in the capital.

According to the officials, the number of extra trips could go up to 60 if Stage-III of GRAP is implemented. Under the GRAP guidelines, which came into force on October 19, public transport agencies are required to increase operations and frequency to reduce the use of private vehicles.

“The step aims to encourage commuters to use Metro services instead of personal cars and two-wheelers, which will help ease pollution levels,” a DMRC official was quoted by TOI as saying.

Managing Director Vikas Kumar has directed that the number of extra trips be raised to 60 if air quality worsens further and Stage-III restrictions are introduced.

Apart from boosting Metro operations, the DMRC has also intensified pollution control measures at its construction sites. Vikas Kumar inspected the ongoing work on the Krishna Park Extension-R K Ashram Marg corridor on Wednesday to ensure that all GRAP guidelines are being followed. He reviewed sites at Ashok Vihar and Derawal Nagar, checking the arrangements made to control dust pollution.

According to Anuj Dayal, DMRC’s Principal Executive Director (Corporate Communications), several steps have been taken to limit dust and emissions at construction sites. “Water sprinkling is being carried out regularly, vehicles are being washed before leaving sites, construction materials are properly covered, and waste is disposed of and recycled safely,” he said.

DMRC has also deployed 82 anti-smog guns at its sites, with more to be added if needed. These machines spray fine water mist to settle dust particles and prevent them from becoming airborne. “DMRC was the first construction agency in NCR to use anti-smog guns even before the government made them mandatory,” Dayal added.

The corporation has also increased inspections by its environment department to ensure strict compliance with pollution control norms.
