Residents across Bengaluru’s municipal limits will experience a full-day water supply disruption on June 19 as the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) undertakes urgent pipeline integration and maintenance work.

The shutdown, from 6 am on June 19 to 6 am the following day, will affect Cauvery water supply throughout the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) area.

According to officials cited by The Indian Express, the temporary halt is necessary to connect a new 3,000-mm diameter pipeline to the existing Cauvery Stage V network at T K Halli, alongside mandatory power system maintenance coordinated with the Karnataka Electricity Transmission Corporation.

With Bengaluru already facing a daily water deficit of 400 million litres (against a demand of 1.3 billion litres), the BWSSB has advised households and businesses to store water in advance. “The shutdown is a temporary inconvenience to help ensure uninterrupted supply in the future,” a BWSSB spokesperson was quoted by HT as saying.

The disruption will impact residential, commercial and industrial zones, particularly in outer areas like Mahadevapura, Yelahanka and Bommanahalli. The board assured that supply would resume by the June 20 deadline.

The ongoing Cauvery Stage V project, designed to supply an additional 775 million litres daily (MLD), aims to bridge the city’s water gap by extending piped connections to 50 lakh residents in 110 peripheral villages. Once fully operational, TimesNow reported that it will raise Bengaluru’s total supply capacity to 2,225 MLD, reducing reliance on tankers and borewells.

However, some residents in newly added zones have raised concerns over high connection charges, slowing uptake in certain localities, HT reported. For now, authorities stress that the 24-hour shutdown is a necessary step to secure smoother water distribution in the years ahead. Citizens are urged to plan accordingly and minimise usage during the outage.
