  • Tata Punch topped India's car sales in 2024, ending Maruti Suzuki's reign.
  • New Punch boasts competitive pricing, robust features and various engine options.
  • Safety focus includes six airbags and a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating.

The Tata Punch became an instant hit when it was launched in India in October 2021. Its popularity soared as years passed and it became the largest-selling car in India in 2024, ending the almost four-decade long dominance of Maruti Suzuki cars. In its facelifted avatar, can the micro-SUV reclaim the top position?

The Punch's four-year journey has been nothing short of impressive, to say the least. While it sold 22,571 units in 2021, the volumes reached 1,29,895 units in 2022, rising to 1,50,182 units in 2023. It became India's largest-selling car, beating all Maruti Suzuki models, in 2024 at 2,02,031 units. This was also the first time that a non-Maruti Suzuki model crossed 2,00,000 units in annual sales.

In 2025, there was some hiccup as sales dropped to 1,73,502 units. This was mainly due to headwinds in the small car space. Another reason was that buyers were waiting for the new Punch, which finally arrived in January 2026.

The new Tata Punch is priced between Rs 5,59,000 and Rs 10,54,000 (ex-showroom). Although it is a micro-SUV and directly rivals the Hyundai Exter, which sits in the price bracket of Rs 5,73,500 to Rs 9,61,098 (ex-showroom), its major rival in the small car space is the Maruti Suzuki Swift premium hatchback, which can be had in the price range of Rs 5,78,900 to Rs 8,79,900 (ex-showroom).

That the Punch is more affordable than the Exter and the Swift at the entry-point shows how diligent Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) has been with the pricing to attract first-time buyers, irrespective of the body style they are looking at. However, having an SUV body style does have an advantage in the Indian market, where this segment commands a share of around 55%.

Just for reference, the Exter garnered sales of 67,908 units in 2025, while the Swift clocked a magnificent 1,89,261 units, according to industry data. Hence, the main rival of the Punch is not the Exter, but the Swift.

Even if we talk about features, Tata has been careful enough to load the new Punch right from the entry-level variant (Smart), which boasts LED headlamps, a digital instrument cluster, iTPMS, keyless entry, Eco and City drive modes, and idle start-stop, among others.

Safety has been a key focus area for Tata, and it is visible in the new Punch as well, with the micro-SUV featuring six airbags, electronic stability control, hill hold assist, ISOFIX and three-point seatbelts for all seats, as standard. Like most of the Tata SUVs, the Punch has also scored a 5-star safety rating at Bharat NCAP.

Tata has played smart with the powertrains as well. Although the 1.2-litre Revotron petrol (88PS and 115Nm) and the 1.2-litre Revotron CNG (73PS and 103Nm) engines have been retained, 5-speed MT and AMT options are available across both petrol and CNG motors. While the CNG penetration in already rising for Tata, the availability of AMT is sure to attract additional buyers looking for a relatively easy driving experience. Tata's twin-cylinder CNG technology frees up more space inside the boot, which is again an advantage.

For buyers looking for an enthusiastic driving experience, Tata has introduced a more powerful 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine (120PS and 170Nm) clubbed with a 5-speed MT.

The new Punch gets the basics right, whether it is the price, engine options, features or safety. Will it be able to become India's best-seller again? The prospects look promising.
