Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) appears to be witnessing strong early demand for the newly launched Tata Sierra, with the company selling more than 14,000 units of the mid-size SUV within the first two months of deliveries.
The Sierra deliveries began in mid-January. According to industry data, Tata sold 7,003 units of the Sierra in January. The sales rose marginally in February to 7,100 units, taking cumulative sales to 14,103 units during the two-month period.
The steady performance across the first two months suggests that demand for the model has remained stable beyond the initial launch phase. The Sierra's early traction is notable given that it is a new entrant in the highly competitive mid-size SUV segment, which is dominated by Korean and Japanese nameplates.
A Tata spokesperson said that the company is ramping up production to keep pace with "strong" bookings while working to reduce the waiting period for customers. Although the company did not share the current Sierra bookings, the SUV garnered 70,000 confirmed bookings on the first day of reservations on December 16.
"The strong bookings and nationwide demand for the Tata Sierra is being addressed with rigor and agility. Since commencing deliveries in mid January, we have successfully dispatched and delivered over 14,000 Sierra vehicles as of February and are firmly on course to further accelerate deliveries. Production is steadily ramping up to scale volumes month on month and quarter on quarter," the spokesperson said.
"Our teams are working closely across manufacturing and the supplier ecosystem to progressively reduce the waiting period from booking to delivery, while ensuring the highest standards of quality and customer experience. Customers with bookings of the Tata Sierra will be kept periodically informed on their expected delivery timelines as we steadily progress towards fulfilling their Sierra ownership experience," the spokesperson added.
The ramp-up in production comes as automakers typically take a few months to stabilise output following the launch of a new model, as supply chains, vendor capacities and plant operations are gradually aligned with booking volumes.
The Sierra is produced at Tata's new Sanand plant (Gujarat), a facility the company acquired from Ford in January 2023. The plant also manufactures internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) versions of the Nexon compact SUV.
In the mid-size SUV segment, which is one of the most competitive spaces in the domestic passenger vehicle (PV) market, established rivals such as the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki Victoris and Kia Seltos continue to dominate volumes.
In the first two months of calendar year (CY) 2026, the Creta recorded cumulative sales of 35,859 units, followed by the Victoris at 28,261 units and the Seltos at 20,947 units.
Despite the strong presence of these established models, the Sierra's early sales of over 14,000 units suggest that the newly introduced SUV has been able to generate significant customer interest within a short period.
