Mercedes-Benz has unveiled an updated S-Class, marking what the company describes as the most extensive mid-cycle refresh within a single generation, with over 50% of the vehicle's components newly developed or reworked. The revised S-Class brings design, technology, comfort, safety and powertrain updates, alongside the introduction of the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which serves as the vehicle's central digital architecture.

Externally, the luxury sedan receives a larger radiator grille, around 20% bigger than before, with four horizontal chrome bars instead of three. For the first time, both the grille and the upright Mercedes star on the bonnet can be illuminated as optional features. Headlamp design has been revised with next-generation Digital Light using micro-LED technology, expanding the high-resolution illumination field by roughly 40%. Rear lighting has also been updated with triple-star motifs.

Inside, the S-Class adopts the MBUX superscreen as standard, integrating a 14.4-inch central display and a 12.3-inch front passenger screen under a single glass panel. A camera-based privacy function limits driver distraction by reducing visibility of passenger content when needed. The instrument panel and centre console have been redesigned, with new trim materials including open-pore woods and a high-gloss metallic textile blend. Mercedes-Benz has also introduced a leather-free interior option for the first time in the S-Class.

Rear-seat functionality remains a focus, especially in the long-wheelbase variant. The first-class rear compartment adds dual 13.1-inch displays, detachable remote controls, folding tables, wireless charging, refrigeration storage, and integrated video conferencing via platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Webex. Interior cameras enable participation in video calls while on the move, subject to market regulations.

The new S-Class runs on MB.OS, a newly developed software and hardware platform linking infotainment, driver assistance, navigation and powertrain systems. Over-the-air updates allow selected features to be upgraded during the vehicle's lifecycle. Fourth-generation MBUX introduces AI-powered voice interaction using multiple large language models, including ChatGPT and Google Gemini, alongside a redesigned zero-layer interface and expanded app ecosystem.

Navigation has been upgraded with Google Maps integration and MBUX surround navigation, which provides a real-time 3D visualisation of nearby vehicles, pedestrians, and road conditions. An augmented-reality head-up display overlays directional guidance directly into the driver's field of view.

Driver assistance is handled by the MB.DRIVE suite, supported by ten external cameras, five radar sensors, and twelve ultrasonic sensors. Systems include adaptive cruise, lane change assist, evasive steering support and automated braking at traffic lights and stop signs. More advanced point-to-point assisted driving will launch first in China, with other markets following subject to regulation.

Comfort enhancements include a heated seat belt, digital vent control for climate management, and a new electric air filter capable of rapidly removing ultra-fine particles from the cabin. Suspension options include Airmatic air suspension as standard and optional E-Active body control, now paired with predictive damping adjustments for improved ride comfort. Rear-axle steering is standard at 4.5 degrees, with an optional 10-degree setup to reduce turning radius.

Powertrain updates span petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid variants. The S 580 4MATIC uses a revised V8 producing 395kW and 750Nm, while six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines gain efficiency and responsiveness improvements. Plug-in hybrid variants offer an electric driving range of around 100km (WLTP). All engines feature a 48V mild-hybrid system with an integrated starter-generator.

Mercedes-Benz has also confirmed a refreshed S-Class Guard variant with certified VR10 ballistic protection, including armoured glass, reinforced body panels, emergency air supply, and fire suppression systems.

Production of the updated S-Class will take place at Mercedes-Benz's Sindelfingen plant in Germany, including Factory 56, which also builds the EQS and Maybach S-Class.

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class will rival the BMW 7 Series and the Audi A8 globally. India launch of the car is not confirmed yet.
