- Till last year Nicholas Pooran was one of the best T-20 batters in the world. Each time he stepped out for the Lucknow Super Giants, there was a sense of anticipation. He would more often than not blast his way and give LSG fans something to cheer about. In fact, he was their batting mainstay and things would revolve around him. So much so he was their highest paid retention and was also a leadership option.
- All this while he was playing international cricket for the West Indies. Then came the retirement and thereafter things have gone steadily downhill for Pooran. Coming into the IPL he did nothing of consequence back home and was always going to be a concern. And in each of the first few matches for LSG, Pooran has looked a shadow of his former self searching for answers, which aren’t forthcoming.
- He has repeatedly struggled to pick up the pace of the ball, failed to anticipate pace off deliveries, has mistimed multiple shots and looked vulnerable against spin. His strike rate has hit rock bottom and in sum he is a big concern for the franchise going forward. In fact, it wouldn’t be wrong to say LSG will do well to make him sit out with immediate effect and try other options as they await the arrival of Josh Inglis. The campaign is fast running away from them and Pooran’s inability with the bat is one of the central reasons.
- This isn’t the first time it is happening. While players might feel that they can continue playing franchise cricket and stay on top of their game, it generally doesn’t happen. Franchise cricket isn’t and can never be the same as international cricket and the rigour is something that is different. Moving from one league to the other could be a good money making option for some but the real deal stays the international game.
- I am not saying Pooran can’t play a one off innings. I am sure he can. But to expect the same consistency from him that LSG was used to isn’t going to happen and that’s something the franchise will do well to come to terms with. It is also a grim reminder how difficult the game is. Players who have made it to the top have done so with extraordinary talent and hard work and to stay at the peak is even more difficult. Pooran is finding it out the hard way and that’s what can impact his mental health. The very same shots which came naturally to him aren’t happening anymore and it could lead to a sense of frustration and unease. That’s when a player has to dig deep and double down on working hard. Do things he has done in the past to check if he can get things back one more time.
- For now Pooran is trapped within the contours of his reputation. LSG expects him to score quick but it isn’t happening for him. For how long they continue with him is something we now need to wait and see.
