In Vedic astrology, nine planets play a role in shaping human destiny. While seven of them are visible in the sky, the remaining two — Rahu and Ketu — are invisible. They are known as shadow planets because they do not have a physical form. Despite their invisibility, they are powerful and deeply influential, often associated with challenges, illusions, and karmic lessons.
On May 18, Rahu is set to move from Pisces to Aquarius, and Ketu will shift from Virgo to Leo. This planetary transit is expected to impact all zodiac signs. But who exactly are Rahu and Ketu? Their origin lies in a fascinating tale from ancient scriptures.
The Churning of the Ocean and the Nectar of Immortality
Long ago, the Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) came together to churn the cosmic ocean — an event known as Samudra Manthan. From this churning emerged various divine treasures. The most sought-after of them all was Amrit, the nectar of immortality, carried by Lord Dhanvantari.
As expected, a fierce conflict broke out between the gods and demons over who should receive the nectar. To resolve the dispute, Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini, a divine enchantress, and offered to distribute the nectar equally.
The Demon Who Tried to Cheat the Gods
While Mohini cleverly gave the nectar only to the gods, one demon, Swarbhanu, saw through the trick. Disguising himself as a god, he managed to sit among them and drank a few drops of the nectar.
However, the Sun and Moon gods spotted the imposter and alerted Vishnu.
How Swarbhanu Became Rahu and Ketu
Acting swiftly, Lord Vishnu revealed his true form and used his divine weapon, the Sudarshan Chakra, to behead Swarbhanu. But by then, the nectar had already taken effect. Swarbhanu didn’t die — instead, his body split into two immortal parts:
Why Rahu and Ketu Matter
Rahu and Ketu are not planets in the physical sense. They represent the north and south lunar nodes, and their positions in one’s birth chart can reveal deep insights about karmic debt, spiritual growth, desires, and past-life influences.
Their presence is often linked to eclipses, transformation, and life-altering events. Though seen as malefic, they also guide individuals toward enlightenment — but often through struggle.
The story of Rahu and Ketu is more than just mythology. It reminds us that transformation often comes through trials. These shadow planets teach us about illusion, truth, detachment, and destiny. In astrology, they continue to guide and challenge us — not to punish, but to help us grow.
