A moderate intensity earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale jolted the Andaman Islands including capital Port Blair at 3:39 pm on Tuesday. The epicenter of the earthquake was reported to be in North Andaman Sea at a depth of 14 km. No damage to life or property has been reported as yet.
The Andaman Islands had witnessed a 7.5 magnitude earthquake on 11th of August 2009 which was the strongest since 2004. The 2004 earthquake that led to a massive Tsunami and killed 228000 people in the Indonesian province of Aceh on the northern tip of Sumatra Island, is still the strongest of the earthquakes reported in the Indian Ocean.
