A leaked slide from Nvidia reveals the roadmap for their Tegra platform and we like what we see. Come 2013, Microsoft will expand its platform reach to other chipset manufacturers and Nvidia seems to be first on that list, at least that we know of. All current WP7 devices are only compatible with Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets and will be for a while.

What’s special about ‘Grey’ chipset is that it will be Nvidia’s first SOC (System-on-a-chip) to feature their processor and GSM/3G radio on a single die. As you know Nvidia recently acquired Icera, the company responsible for developing 3G and 4G modems for mobile devices, this way a manufacturer can implement a complete package and be assured of performance and full compatibility. While that’s still a long time away, we can look forward to Kal-El, which should be announced by the end of 2011. This will be the first quad-core chip on the market, which is said to offer up to 5x performance boost over Tegra 2. Nvidia has been focusing a lot their mobile chips and Microsoft’s decision to add Nvidia as a chipset partner can only be a good thing for the software giant.
