Veteran social activist and Gandhian Anna Hazare ended his 98-hour long fast-unto-death for a strict anti-corruption law on Saturday after the government bowed before people power and agreed to most of Anna's demands. The government has agreed to set up a five-member panel against corruption.

Calling this the happiest day of his life, Hazare said, "Government has accepted all our demands. This is a victory for the entire nation." Offering juice to supporters fasting with him, he said, "This victory is a result of your sacrifice."

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said this consensus augurs well for our democracy assuring that the government will table the Lokpal Bill in the monsoon session of Parliament.

Apart from Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who would chair the committee, the other representatives of the government include,Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal, Law Minister Veerappa Moily, Water Resources Minister Salman Khursheed and Home Minister P Chidambaram.

Representing the civil society would be former Law Minster Shanti Bhushan (who would be the co-chairman), Anna Hazare, eminent lawyer Prashant Bushan, RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal and retired Supreme Court judge Santosh Hegde.

It took four days for Anna to get the government agree to every point of the agenda, which almost looked unbelievable a week ago. With the nation expressing solidarity to Hazare's call, the Jan Lokpal Bill is finally getting its strength to combat corruption.

The governments of Indian republic have tried eight times to get the Lokpal Bill in the past. From Indira Gandhi
