Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi today slammed union government for imposing restriction on export of cotton bales stating the measure is 'anti-farmer'.

Inaugurating "krushi-mela" (agriculture fair) in Una town of Junagadh district Modi said the UPA government is trying to create hurdles in agriculture as it can not digest the progress of farmers of Gujarat which is the biggest producer of cotton in the country.

Union government's policy to slap restriction to export a maximum of 50 lakh cotton bales would benefit mediators but ruin farmers of Gujarat, Modi said.

The ginners in the state who convert raw cotton into bales form by ginning and processing had recently gone on an indefinite strike protesting against restriction on export of cotton at 50 lakh bales after which the union government said it would allow export of additional 15 lakh bales. But the decision has not been notified yet.

Cotton prices have been ruling weak in both domestic and international markets at present and higher exports also may not help cotton farmers much, according to traders.
