US President Donald Trump on Monday praised Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for his pivotal role in brokering negotiations with Hamas, as the two leaders opened the Gaza summit in Sharm El-Sheikh. Trump had arrived in Egypt aboard Air Force One earlier in the day, following a brief visit to Israel.
Meeting in the Red Sea resort, Trump told reporters that Sisi “had a very important role with Hamas. In fact, the general right here was very instrumental because Hamas respects this country, and they respect the leadership of Egypt. So, he played a very important role, I appreciate it very much.”
Speaking through a translator, Sisi welcomed delegates to the “city of peace,” describing the ceasefire deal as an “unprecedented accomplishment.” He also expressed his commitment to ensuring the truce holds and that the remains of all Israeli hostages are returned.
“I was sure you were the only one, Mr. President, who can end this war... the only one capable of bringing peace to our region,” Sisi told Trump during their joint appearance, as more than two dozen world leaders gathered for the summit.
