Hamas has rejected the idea of a foreign entity managing post-war Gaza, amid efforts by the United States to push a new peace plan to end the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict.
Taher Al-Nono, Media Adviser to the Head of Hamas’s Political Office, told Reuters that the group opposes certain aspects of recent peace proposals.
“The weapons of the Palestinian resistance are tied to the existence of the occupation and the defense of our Palestinian people. If the occupation ends and a Palestinian state is established, then these weapons would become part of the state,” he mentioned.
“We have said that we are ready to accept a truce that could last for years,” he added.
“We have not received the plan being talked about. When we do, we will state our position on it according to the interests of our people.”
“Our people are more capable of managing their own affairs themselves. We support the formation of a technocratic government to administer both the West Bank and Gaza in order to ensure political and geographic unity.”
The statements come as US President Donald Trump met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, where he told reporters he is “confident” about achieving peace in Gaza. During the talks, Trump is expected to push a new peace plan aimed at ending the Israel-Gaza war.
Netanyahu, however, noted that nothing has been “finalised yet,” while Hamas confirmed it has not formally received the proposal.
At the White House, Netanyahu also called Qatar’s leader and apologised for Israel’s strike on Doha earlier this month, CBS reported, citing sources.
