There is, of course, the world-famous Bali beaches and nightlife, but in the back corners of the island lie the spots that have not been completely spoiled by mass tourism. These places just show the underbelly of Bali, where culture and nature co-exist successfully.

1. East Bali

Eastern Bali is slower-paced and gives the feeling of the old Bali. Tirta Gangga Water Palace, with its fountains, koi ponds and gardens, is a quiet retreat, whereas the black sand beaches of Amed and the coral reefs make it ideal for snorkelling and viewing the sunrise. Both locations allow you to feel like you have been in Bali without the people.

2. Central Highlands

In the high interior of Bali, it is colder and the landscape more dramatic. With its hills covered with mists and spice plantations, Munduk village is the right place to explore waterfalls and lakes by trekking. The unmarred trails and the classic homestays in the region provide an insight into the rural living of Balinese people beyond the tourist hubs.

3. Valleys and Rice Terraces Sidemen Valley and Rice Terraces

Sidemen Valley and the Jatiluwih rice terraces are the best you can see other than Ubud when you want to see rice fields. The ancient subak irrigation system and endless green terraces of Jatiluwih, a UNESCO-recognised landscape, represent Bali.

4. Island and Marine Escapes

The mainland takes one out to the wild side of Bali. The rocky cliffs, secret beaches and natural pools of Nusa Penida are in contrast to the smooth shore of Bali. The Menjangan Island, which is a portion of a conservation area, has some of the best snorkelling spots, beaches that are untouched and much fewer tourists than in the southern part of Bali.

5. Northern Bali and Hidden Springs

North Bali conceals some of the most beautiful waterfalls and jungle pools of the island. Secret Gardens of Sambangan contain a variety of cascades linked by hiking paths, and Banyu Wana Amertha has multiple tiers of waterfalls, which are enchanted in the early mornings when the surrounding forest is silent and misty.
