The country of India is scattered with spectacular caves that are the fusion of natural miracles and the history of people. These seven caves are filled with tales of spirituality, artistry and mystery that are yet to be unearthed using finely hewn rock temples to some of the deepest limestone structures ever.

1. Andhra Pradesh Undavalli Caves
These monolithic caves in and around Vijayawada date back to the 4th-5th century and are hewn out of solid sandstone. They have a multi-storeyed building with a huge reclining Vishnu idol, as they have the ancient rock-cut architecture of the region and Buddhist influence.

2. Ajanta Caves, Maharashtra
The 30 rock-cut caves of Ajanta, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are dated between the 2nd century BCE and the 6th century CE. Ajanta is known to have the finest murals and sculptures, which epitomise the Buddhist art and tales.

3. Borra Caves, Andhra Pradesh
Located in the Ananthagiri Hills, these are the natural limestone caves that were created millions of years ago. Their spectacular stalactite and stalagmite structures, as well as tribal mythologies, make them one of the most interesting geological marvels in India.

4. Elephanta Caves, Maharashtra
These 5th-6th-century rockcut caves on the island named Elephanta off Mumbai honoured Lord Shiva. The magnificent statues, such as the famous Trimurti, display unusual artistry and religious profundity.

5. Khandagiri Caves, Odisha
These antique Jain caves around Bhubaneswar had been carved in the reign of King Kharavela and were used by monks. Complex carvings, inscriptions and meditation chambers depict the spiritual way of life of early Jain ascetics.

6. Siju Caves, Meghalaya ( South Garo Hills )
Siju is one of the longest limestone cave systems in India, known as the Bat Cave. It has dramatic chambers, underground rivers, and fossil formations that make it an out-of-this-world experience for both explorers and nature lovers.

These caves are all indicative of the great diversity of the Indian heritage. Others were erected as shrines, and others were sculpted out of the gradual hand of nature. A trip to them is not only an adventure but also the ability to see the mysteries of the past that are still filled with awe to this day.
