Eight candidates from Kerala Congress's Joseph faction — UDF's third major constituent — arrived together to pray at Chandy's grave. All of them also started their campaign from Puthuppally.
As a mark of respect for Chandy, the authorities of the St George Orthodox Church at Puthuppally decided to change their decades-old practice of burying deceased non-priest church members in the cemetery or in their family vaults.
During his decades long political career, he had spent a major chunk of his life in the state capital as legislator, leader of the Congress party and a chief minister.
Senior Congress leader Oommen Chandy, who served as the chief minister of Kerala twice, died in Bengaluru in the early hours of Tuesday, his family said.
Oommen Chand was the chief minister of Kerala twice for a total of seven years. He had also served as Minister of Labour, Home, and Finance in various governments headed by K Karunakaran and AK Antony. He also served as the Leader of Opposition in the Kerala assembly.
Chandy, who had not been keeping well for quite some time, had been staying in Bengaluru for treatment at a health facility.
