ChatGPT has introduced a major update, enabling apps to be used directly within its platform. This integration allows developers to create tools accessible to any user without leaving the chatbot interface. Among the early adopters is Spotify, which now allows ChatGPT users to create playlists and search for podcasts with unprecedented specificity.

This functionality simplifies exploration, which would otherwise require extensive manual searching within Spotify. Users can iteratively refine playlists by discussing preferences with ChatGPT, adjusting length, diversity, or mood to suit individual tastes. Spotify emphasises that adding detailed prompts ensures better results. While the feature is still in its early stages, ongoing updates are expected to improve responsiveness and flexibility over time.

With the integration, users can link their Spotify account to ChatGPT via a connection button that appears when a query references the music platform. Once connected, ChatGPT can generate playlists or find podcasts based on detailed prompts, including genre, mood, artist, topic, host, or guest. Examples include requests for “an 80s rock playlist with a joyful tone” or “a podcast explaining scientific concepts with a comedic style.”

The feature is currently available globally, except in the European Union, where OpenAI has indicated it will be rolled out soon. Any ChatGPT subscriber, free or paid, can access the Spotify integration. Importantly, Spotify notes that the feature is opt-in, can be disconnected at any time, and that no music, podcasts, or other content is shared with OpenAI for training purposes.

Spotify’s approach aligns with its broader effort to mitigate the impact of AI on the music industry, particularly in protecting artists’ rights and ensuring ethical use of content.
