Delhi-Agra Expressway crash: 13 killed, 25 injured in massive pile-up; PM Modi announces ex-gratia

Mathura SSP said the accident took place at the Yamuna Expressway Milestone 127. The reason was low visibility due to fog.

Thirteen people died of burns and 25 others sustained injured in a major road accident on the Delhi-Agra Expressway in Mathura on Tuesday morning after dense fog severely reduced visibility, officials said.

According to PTI, the crash occurred near milestone 127 and involved a total of 10 vehicles, including seven buses and three cars.

According to the police, the poor visibility led to a massive pile-up on the expressway. Following the collision, several vehicles caught fire. Emergency services rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations to evacuate the injured and clear the road.

“An accident took place at the Yamuna Expressway Milestone 127. The reason was low visibility. 7 buses and 3 cars collided as a result of which, a fire broke out in all the vehicles... The rescue operation is nearing completion, and so far, 4 people have died. 25 people have been admitted to the hospital, and none of them are in a serious condition,” SSP Mathura, Shlok Kumar said.

Notably, several cities in Uttar Pradesh experienced thick smog and dense fog on Monday, leading to poor visibility on roads.

PM Modi announces Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for next of kin

PM Modi announces an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased, and Rs 50,000 for the injured, in the accident that occurred due to a multi-vehicle collision on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura.

PMO tweets, "The loss of lives due to a mishap on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, is extremely painful. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM"

'Extremely tragic': Yogi Adityanath expresses grief over Yamuna Expressway accident

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the road accident on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura district.

In a post on X, the Chief Minister extended his condolences to the families of the victims.

The Chief Minister wrote, "The loss of lives in the road accident on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura district is extremely tragic and heart-rending. My condolences are with the bereaved families. Instructions have been given to the district administration officials for the proper treatment of the injured. I pray to Lord Shri Ram that he grants place at his divine feet to the departed souls and bestows swift recovery to the injured."
